Division of Infectious Diseases

The Division of Infectious Diseases provides a wide range of clinical services, research and educational programs. Faculty at both the University of California, Irvine Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Long Beach Healthcare System are active in all three areas and notably contribute to both division and Department of Medicine teaching, research and clinical activities.

Research
Researchers in the Division of Infectious Diseases conduct basic, clinical and epidemiological studies with funding from a variety of sources including the National Institutes of Health, Universitywide Aids Research Program, Health Resources and Services Administration, industry and philanthropic organizations. Our faculty members provide leadership in the Pacific Southwest Regional Center for Excellence for Biodefense & Emerging Infectious Diseases Research, and serve on the faculty of the Center for Virus Research and UC Irvine Center for Immunology. more

Education
An educational leader in Southern California, especially in the area of HIV/AIDS, the Division of Infectious Diseases trains medical students, residents and fellows as well as practicing physicians and other health care providers.

The division is home to the only Orange County site for the Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC), a program that provides HIV/AIDS training to health care professionals throughout Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties as well as the city of Long Beach. Through this program, the Division organizes “HIV/AIDS on the Front Line,” an annual, multidisciplinary conference drawing approximately 300 attendees from the region. This year, in addition to the AETC programs, the division hosted “Bioterrorism and Emerging Infectious Diseases,” a conference designed for emergency department and primary care physicians as well as first responders.

Clinical Services
The Division of Infectious Diseases provides comprehensive patient care at UCIMC, the Veterans Affairs Long Beach Healthcare System, (LBVA) and at the Orange County Healthcare Agency HIV Clinic. Division faculty have clinical expertise in all areas of infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, infection control, virology, mycology, parasitology, and bacteriology.
