Fellowship

Endocrinology Fellowship Program Overview

Welcome to the University of California, Irvine Endocrinology Fellowship. The UC Irvine Endocrinology fellowship training program is a 2 year ACGME accredited program that offers clinical training in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. The program consists of three fellows that serve both the UC Irvine and Long Beach VA campuses, giving a broad range of clinical experiences and exposure to a wide patient population. Fellows gain extensive inpatient and outpatient experiences at two main training sites – UC Irvine Douglas Hospital and the Long Beach VA.

Setting:

There are two main sites of training for the Endocrinology Fellowship. The UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, CA houses the remodeled UC Irvine Douglas hospital, and has been on US New and World Report’s annual “America’s Best Hospitals” since 2001. The UC Irvine Douglas hospital opened in 2009 and provides tertiary and quaternary care with over 19,000 inpatient admissions per year. The Long Beach VA Hospital is a 237 bed hospital located in Long Beach, California and provides care to over 50,000 veterans.

Fellows and faculty:

The fellowship employs 4 fellows annually; two fellows are accepted in alternating years for a total of four fellows. During their rotations, fellows interact with not only faculty from the Endocrine Division at UCI Irvine and the Long Beach VA, but also many community volunteer physicians who are active in community practice and organizations. This interaction gives fellows an exposure to multiple examples of different practice experiences.

Clinical Activities:

Fellows experience a wide range of experiences in 2-4 month block rotations at each training site. Rotations are based at the main training site (UCI or LBVA) and incorporate an inpatient and outpatient experience simultaneously. Fellows also do one block of research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Research opportunities include basic science laboratories at UCI and the VA, as well as clinical research opportunities and performance improvement projects. In addition to weekly continuity endocrine and diabetes clinics, the program also offers the following additional clinical rotations:

  • Weekly clinic in Pediatric Endocrinology at CHOC
  • Weekly Diabetes/Endocrinology clinic at Gottschalk Joslin Medical Center
  • Monthly Lipid Clinic at the Long Beach VA
  • Thyroid FNA biopsy clinic at the Long Beach VA
  • Senior fellows attend Endocrine University (1 week conference at the Mayo Clinic)

Didactic Activities:

Fellows are invited to attend several didactic experiences including:

  • Monthly Endocrinology Grand Rounds
  • Weekly Journal club or case conference at the VA
  • Monthly case conference at UCI
  • Monthly endocrinology didactic series given by faculty
  • Weekly case-based endocrinology series at UCI
