Salary & Benefits
Annual stipends (as of July 1, 2024) —
- PGY-1 = $85,735
- PGY-2 = $88,227
- PGY-3 = $91,280
Vacation leave — Residents are offered four weeks of vacation leave annually.
Parental leave — Residents can take up to 8 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
Health insurance — Residents are provided with medical, dental and vision insurance, including coverage for their dependents (spouse/children/domestic partner) at no cost. Long-term disability insurance also is provided for residents.
Professional liability insurance — Residents are provided with professional liability coverage for all activities that are approved components of the residency program.
Licensing & Exam Stipend — Expenses for California medical licensure, USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX 3 is provided.
Educational Expenditure Stipend — Each resident receives up to $1,500 per academic year for board study materials, conference registration/travel, journals, books, etc., as per Department of Medicine reimbursement policy.
Meals — Lunch is provided Monday through Friday during noon conference lectures at UC Irvine Medical Center and at VA Long Beach. Meal vouchers are provided at Long Beach Memorial for those rotating on the MICU service. In addition, each resident receives a meal stipend of $120 a month ($1440 a year) for use at the UC Irvine Douglas Hospital cafeteria.
