About Us

Dr. George V. Lawry, Rheumatology division chief, with patient in the intensive care unit at UC Irvine Douglas Hospital.

Faculty members of the Division of Rheumatology at UC Irvine's School of Medicine are dedicated to providing exceptional care for patients with a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions and rheumatic diseases.

Division rheumatologists are experts in the diagnosis and management of all types of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis and crystalline arthritis, as well as such complex connective tissue disorders as systemic lupus, systemic vasculitis, myositis and scleroderma. These physicians also are involved in clinical trials and research that seek to advance treatment and therapies for these conditions.

In addition to teaching medical students and internal medicine residents as part of their core curriculum, division faculty members mentor physicians in our highly competitive, fully accredited fellowship program at UC Irvine Medical Center, Orange County's only university medical center, and at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach. Fellows are trained in the most innovative methods for diagnosing and treating rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders. Our faculty members have a particular interest and expertise in musculoskeletal physical examination.

We in the Department of Medicine's Division of Rheumatology strive to provide our patients with the highest-quality care and to inspire our students, residents and fellows to discover the challenge and excitement of caring for patients with rheumatic diseases.

We Are Greater Together

Here at UCI Department of Medicine, we highly value diversity. Diversity is core to our ability to offer compassionate and culturally competent care in a variety of practice settings, to patients from all walks of life, addressing simple to complex healthcare needs, while working with others who embrace a broad variety of backgrounds, experience, and perspectives. We remain committed to advancing diversity, in its broadest sense, in our programs through recruitment, training, retention and mentoring. This, we believe, is vital to our ability to continue to achieve excellence in serving our richly diverse community through our discover, teach, and heal mission. If this collaborative, respectful, and inclusive approach speaks to you, I look forward to your selection of UCI Department of Medicine as your training program of choice.
