Impact of diet on the microbiome will be explored in 2021-2022 Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute (SSIHI) Pilot Study Award

UCI nephrologists Drs. Lau, Rhee and Kalantar-Zadeh in partnership with Dr. Whiteson from the UCI Microbiome Center have received a SSIHI Pilot Study Award to investigate the impact of low-protein plant-based diets on the gut microbiome, in chronic kidney disease patients. The study will also analyze blood levels of metabolites derived from intestinal bacteria, focusing on gut-derived toxins that promote cardiovascular disease.
