Dr. Andrew Reikes, chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine

We in the Division of General Internal Medicine & Primary Care at UC Irvine's School of Medicine are dedicated to conducting leading-edge research, providing the highest quality clinical education and delivering superb care to our patients.

The division is the largest within both the Department of Medicine and the School of Medicine. It is the academic home for 58 faculty members, including nationally and internationally recognized experts in primary care, hospital medicine, palliative care, geriatrics, executive wellness and weight management, health outcomes research and medical ethics.

These physicians comprise a significant number of the School of Medicine's core faculty, the teachers who give hands-on training to UC Irvine's medical students and residents.

Our highly engaged faculty members also are national leaders in health policy research and hospital medicine. We are driving and improving health care through initiatives in executive wellness and weight management, elder care and disease prevention. Many are innovators in medical education, developing curricula to advance medical ethics and to train our students and residents to understand the business of medicine, honor spiritual values and improve end-of-life care.

Division members work with other departments and schools on joint education, research and patient care activities. They also hold numerous leadership roles within the School of Medicine, the Department of Medicine and UC Irvine Medical Center.

The physicians in the division practice at the medical center in Orange, the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, Long Beach Memorial Hospital and the ambulatory care practices on the Irvine campus and at the medical center in Orange. This gives the residents in our extremely competitive program the broadest possible range of clinical experiences.

Our clinical faculty members not only train future specialists to coordinate the overall care of hospitalized patients, they also are dedicated to ensuring that this care is of the highest quality. Their efforts have placed UC Irvine Medical Center first among University of California hospitals in delivering low mortality and patient readmission rates.

Here at UC Irvine's Division of General Internal Medicine, we strive to foster innovation, to recruit and train the finest physicians and ultimately to provide the most comprehensive and compassionate patient care.
