Application Process

Applicants must apply through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) of the American College of Associates (AAMC). The following is required as part of your application:

  • MSPE or Dean’s Letter
  • Chair’s Letter (from the Chair of Medicine or Designee)
  • A minimum of two (2) additional letters of recommendation (up to the maximum allowed by ERAS)
  • Scores from USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX 1 with first time passage
  • We do not have a minimum cutoff score for consideration.
  • USMLE Step 2 CK and CS are not required for initial application but are required to begin the residency program. Osteopathic students are not required to take the USMLE examinations.
  • Requirements for California state licensure must be met, including proof of  at least four week of family medicine training during medical school, either as part of a formal clerkship or as an ongoing longitudinal rotation.
  • Only applications submitted through ERAS will be considered. Applications submitted after Nov. 1st will not be considered.
  • All positions are filled through the NRMP, which takes place each year in March.
  • Categorical applicant interviews are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from end of October through the last week of December (except holidays) at UC Irvine Medical Center. This year, interviews will begin on Oct. 22 and extend through Dec. 19, 2019.
