Research
Scope
Research is an essential function of every division in the Department of Medicine. With nearly 300 active research protocols, the department has the largest research scope at the university. Our diverse research activities include:
- Clinical studies (47%)
- Translational research
- Biomedical research
- Behavioral studies, and
- Research training
Locations
Department of Medicine faculty conduct research at three main locations, each of which is equipped with basic science labs.
- University of California, Irvine (main campus)
- University of California, Irvine Medical Center
- Long Beach VA Medical Center
Funding
Since 1997, the Department of Medicines direct funding from the National Institutes of Health has more than tripled. In 2005, overall research funding for
DOM faculty totaled $37.7 million. Of this, $14.1 million was received in direct grants from the NIH. The remainder was awarded to DOM faculty through grants administered by other campus departments and centers as well as through the Southern California Institute for Research and Education.

Leadership
Department of Medicine researchers also serve in various university leadership roles.
